The McLennan County Sheriff's Department Aviation Unit has been in operation for
over twenty years. The unit consists of 3 OH-58 Bell Helicopters that were obtained
through the Federal 1208 surplus aircraft program at no cost to the taxpayers of
the county.
Chief Pilot Stu Royle and Pilot Shawn Nixon operate these aircraft.
The aircraft are used to supplement ground units for patrol. The main mission of
the Aviation Unit is the detection and eradication of drugs and drug dealers in
McLennan County. Additional mission include Search and Rescue, Drowning, Manhunts,
Photography, Vehicle Pursuits, and Public Relations. The aircraft are not used to
transport prisoners.
The unit responds to calls for assistance from Public Safety Agencies within the
county as well as surrounding counties. The Aviation Unit can be reached through
