Aviation Unit

The McLennan County Sheriff's Department Aviation Unit has been in operation for over 20 years. The unit consists of 3 OH-58 Bell Helicopters that were obtained through the Federal 1208 surplus aircraft program at no cost to the taxpayers of the county.

Chief Pilot Shawn Nixon and Pilot Richard Studer operate this aircraft.

Aircraft Use


The aircraft is used to supplement ground units for patrol. The main mission of the Aviation Unit is the detection and eradication of drugs and drug dealers in McLennan County. Additional mission include:
  • Drowning
  • Manhunts
  • Photography
  • Public relations
  • Search and rescue
  • Vehicle pursuits
The aircraft are not used to transport prisoners.
